"Raffles - gentleman, soldier, thief A.J. Raffles leads the leisured life of a wealthy Victorian gentleman - playing cricket all summer and doing nothing for the rest of the year - or so it seems ... But when Bunny, in desperate financial straits, seeks help from his boyhood mentor, he discovers that this admirable man has turned his audacity, resourcefulness and courage to the service of crime. Ever loyal, Bunny joins forces with Raffles, becoming Watson to his underworld Holmes. The two embark on a series of daring and imaginative illegal exploits - just one step ahead of MacKenzie of Scotland Yard. The stories collected here take Raffles from his glamorous early days to his time as a soldier in the Boer War. His adventures on the edge of civilized society are romantic, gripping and impossible to put down."

E.W. Hornung

E.W. Hornung (7 June 1866 – 22 March 1921) was an English author and poet known for writing the A. J. Raffles series of stories about a gentleman thief in late 19th-century London. Hornung was educated at Uppingham School; as a result of poor health he left the school in December 1883 to travel to Sydney, where he stayed for two years. He drew on his Australian experiences as a background when he began writing, initially short stories and later novels.
