When US presidential candidate Joe Biden chose Kamala Harris, senator and attorney, as his running mate in the race for the president's post, the world sat up in attention. For the first time in the history of the United States, a Black-Asian woman had emerged as a candidate for one of the most powerful offices in the land. And, when the Democratic Party won, Kamala Harris became the first woman vice president-elect in the history of the country. Ever since Biden's announcement, the questions have buzzed on: What is it that makes Kamala Harris well-suited for the top job? Why does she attribute so much of her success to her Indian immigrant mother? And how did she manage to seize - and hold - the imagination of a nation in one of the most polarized and keenly contested elections in modern America
